Provider Acknowledgement For Emergency Medication
Overview of Emergency Medication Administration
In critical situations within the IPD, a ward nurse may need to administer emergency medication to a patient. This can occur under two primary circumstances:
Consultation with a Doctor: The nurse consults the doctor (possibly over the phone) and administers the medication as advised.
Immediate Action: The nurse administers the medication first, due to the urgency of the situation, and then informs the doctor afterward.
In both scenarios, the administered medication may lack a direct prescription (Rx) reference at the time of administration. However, it is crucial that this emergency medication is documented and later acknowledged by a provider to ensure that the treatment is officially confirmed and recorded.
Capturing Emergency Medication
The system allows nurses to record emergency medication administered during such situations. This record is then visible in several sections of the IPD Dashboard, including:
Treatments Section: Displays the administered medication, awaiting the doctor’s confirmation.
Treatments section displays the status of emergency medication administered as “Not Acknowledged”Drug Chart Display: Shows the details of the medication as administered for ongoing patient management.

To finalize the emergency medication administration workflow, the medication must be acknowledged by a provider. You can read more about Emergency Medication Workflow here.
Provider Acknowledgement Workflow
Notifications Tab
Bahmni offers a fully customizable interface within the Clinical module, specifically through the Notifications Tab. This tab is designed to facilitate the provider acknowledgment process, where details of the emergency medication administered by the nurse are presented for review and confirmation by the provider.
Key features of the Notifications Tab:
Patient Records Display: Lists all patients with pending medication acknowledgments. The records are sorted in descending order by the date of medication administration, ensuring that the most recent and urgent cases are highlighted.
Mandatory Notes Field: The provider is required to enter notes before acknowledging the medication. This field ensures that any relevant observations or instructions are recorded.
Acknowledge Button: Allows the provider to confirm the emergency medication. Once acknowledged, the system updates the status of the medication across the IPD Dashboard.
Workflow Completion
Once a provider acknowledges the emergency medication:
The status in the IPD Dashboard's Treatments section changes from Not Acknowledged to Acknowledged.
This update is reflected across other relevant sections, ensuring that the patient's treatment record is complete and accurate.
The acknowledgment and any accompanying notes are permanently stored within the patient’s record, maintaining a comprehensive audit trail.
Navigation and User Interaction
Patient ID as a Navigation Tool: In the Notifications Tab, the Patient ID is clickable. Clicking on the Patient ID opens the patient’s details in a new tab, allowing the provider to review the entire patient record and context before confirming the medication.
Configurability and Custom Queries
The Notifications Tab interface is fully configurable, allowing healthcare facilities to tailor it to their specific needs. Administrators can set up custom queries to extract and display the required details for provider acknowledgment, ensuring that the interface aligns with the facility’s operational protocols.
Conclusion
The Provider Acknowledgement Tab is a critical feature for managing emergency medication administration within the IPD Dashboard. By facilitating the systematic capture and acknowledgment of emergency medications, this feature ensures that all patient care actions are properly documented and reviewed, supporting both compliance and patient safety.
This guide provides a comprehensive resource for understanding and utilizing the Provider Acknowledgement Tab, ensuring that healthcare providers can efficiently manage and confirm emergency interventions within the IPD setting.
